Python and How Great It Is

Posted here on Eweek, Darryl Taft creates a slideshow of the versatility of Python, an open-source programming language. Some highlights are the fact that python was actually named after Monte Python, an old satirical show. Also, currently Python is run in plenty of today's major websites, including google, yahoo and youtube. It also runs in our cellphones, like ones from Nokia, and is found almost anywhere. Again, here is the link for the python.

Magnitude 7.0 Earthquake Hits Haiti

At 4:53 PM Tuesday, January 12, 2010, a major earthquake struck the Carribean island of Haiti, near Cuba, as many of you might know. With no construction standards, the weak infastructure was destroyed by the strength of this earthquake. Many lie dead and many more are left accounted for. Luckily, according to Robert Manuel, Haiti's ambassador to Mexico, Haiti's president Rene Preval and his wife have survived. The earthquake was 10 miles (15 kilometers) west of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, a depth of 5 miles (8 kilometers), and an initial magnitude of 7.0. In Port-au-Prince, many buildings were demolished, from little huts to the grand palace! The Red Cross have reported at least three million have been affected by this disaster; people are either dead or missing.

Already the poorest country in the western hemisphere, estimating to about 9.8 million civilians, Haiti's state after this disaster is terrifying. Many countries have accepted the call for aid. The U.N. has sent its special convoy, Bill Clinton, to access the situation and has also pledged to help. Likewise, Germany has also pledged to help. Canada and the U.S. have promised aid. Canada has already allocated 5 million dollars from their disaster relief fund and have also promised to send 200,000 litres of water a day to Haiti.

CES (Consumer Electronics Show)

The Consumer Electronics Show is an international public trade show held every January, in Nevada, Las Vegas. Many things were announced at CES.

One thing was Project Natal. Project Natal, unveiled by the CEO of Microsoft, Steve Ballmer, is a new technology made exclusively for the XBox 360. It contains motion detection and acts as the Wii was supposed to. This new family-friendly technology will probably bring in many more family constumers to microsoft. You can click here for more information on Project Natal.

Among other things, Microsoft with HP, has also unveiled the HP Slate PC. This tablet piece of technology is a new, small and portable tablet computer is "more powerful than a phone and almost as powerful as a PC. Perfect for reading, surfing the web, and taking entertainment on the go. This new portable device might make laptops obsolete. Hopefully this will not happen because I have an HP laptop at home. You can get videos and moer information here.

Lastly another object of interest would be 3D TV. With recent success with movies, like Avatar, three-dimensional visual entertainment has caught the interest of many companies and people. These television sets will start at $2000 US. They will also require special 3D glasses. US cable companies have already started creating new channels for the 3D TVs. ESPN has announced that it will have the World Cup of Soccer and the NBA in 3D by June 2010. For more information click here.

Tech Update

Its been a while since my last blog. For the month of December, my life has been plagued with season festivities and university applications. One thing to look out for is the current political situation in Iran. There are videos up about the protests in Iran for the right for democracy; uprises against the Iranian rulers. I shall post up links or videos later today about this event. Its sad to say that the media does not show any attention to this uprising in Iran. Its also funny that Americans will go overseas to fight for democracy, but won't cross the street to vote. Let us pay attention to the rights, that we take for granted, are being fought for by people in Iran.
