OLPC XO Laptop

Last year, the students in this course helf a funraiser to buy two XO laptops. These laptops have been designed for use by students in third-world countries. They are given to students to take home, where in some cases they might be the only source of light. The class kept one laptop and the other was donated to the OLPC program.

The XO contains many innovative features, such as daylight visible screen, a flash drive, mesh networking, and a large collection of pre-installed software.

Polls Everywhere

Can cellphones actually be used to enhance school education? I think so. Sites like, www.polleverwhere.com, allow teachers to make their own polling on questions of their choice. Here's my poll: Lambert's Poll. If you want to say No, text '29598' to 99503, if Yes, text '29478' to 99503 also (this poll works only for states, but you can adjust setting for anywhere). If you don't care, no worries, just keep going. Schools can use this for aspects of business, history, english, chemistry, and many more. The questions don't even have to be "Yes/No" questions; it can be used for multiple choice as well. I believe that this polling system could be valuable, as many kids, who would have otherwise not participate in class, can partipate by texting annoynomously their answers to whatever question of the teacher's choosing. In this way, the teacher can address problems that deal according to the majority of voters. Currently, many school policies don't allow cellphones in class. At our school, cellphones are convisgated on sight. Leave a comment! Do you think this will be effective? Should we try to get this in our school systems?

ICT Stuff

In class, we went to Wolfram Alpha (www.wolframalpha.com), a site, which gives you all the information about any piece of information. We learned about binary code. My number in binary is 01101. We also went to Google Analytics (www.google.com/analytics), which gave us information about traffic for websites. I attached it to this blog, but sadly, the traffic at my website is terrible. Here are two friends, whose site you should also follow:
